Pediatric Bereavement Room

University Hospital, San Antonio | San Antonio, TX

In September 2019, the Gus Owen Stephens Foundation opened our first Pediatric Bereavement room at University Hospital.

This room serves pediatric patients in the last few days of their lives who cannot die at home. It has expanded space so that it feels open and inviting to family members and friends. It holds a queen sized bed for the patient that parents can crawl into;  special legacy making resources, non-fluorescent lighting, and a basket of food and amenities for the family using the space.

We worked hard to make the space feel as close to home as possible.  It has seen families almost weekly since its opening and given them glimpses peace and hope during tragedy.

University Hospital, San Antonio is one of the nation’s leading teaching hospitals and South Texas’ premier Level I trauma center. Ranked Best Hospital in the region by U.S. News & World Report for six years in a row, University Hospital offers the most technically advanced care available anywhere, in an inviting and comfortable setting.

We're thankful to the advisors, partners and friends of Gus Owen Stephens Foundation for their constant support and are always looking for volunteers to help us better serve the community. Join us in our mission to improve pediatric palliative care across Central Texas.
